A History of Quality Service and Care

A TIMELINE (Click Here for Narrative)

1945 Beth Sholom Home of Virginia, located in Richmond, converted an old mansion into a 34-bed Jewish residence for the elderly. For the next 35 years, this one Jewish home in Central Virginia served all Jewish residents of the Commonwealth.

1948 As a result of a statewide conference convened by the Council of Jewish Federations (CJF), a Community Support Agreement was established between the Jewish community of Richmond and Beth Sholom Home of Virginia. A Board of Directors was created encompassing members from Richmond, Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Petersburg.

1955 The Home had a significant waiting list and another study conducted by CJF recommended a larger facility be built to ultimately accommodate 80 beds. Although the Home continued its primary licensure as a home for the aged, provision was made to include the enfeebled age as well.

1962 A new building was constructed, again in Richmond, to serve as a health care nursing facility, increasing to 116 beds by 1965.

1966/1971 With the advent of Medicare and Medicaid, Beth Sholom was certified to provide services in accordance with the requirements of both programs. The Home was modified to keep abreast of regulatory changes in the life safety equipment.

1973 A long-range plan was established by each of the three Jewish federations in Virginia to determine the needs of the Jewish elderly in each area. A decision was made to build an additional facility in the Tidewater-Peninsula area. In 1978, a 9.3-acre site was purchased in the College Park area of Virginia Beach for the development of Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, a 120-bed nursing home. The site offered expansion potential for the Home and allowed the subsequent building of a 119-apartment facility for the well elderly. As a sponsor for HUD Section 202/8 Housing for the Elderly, and financed with Federal money and Industrial Revenue Bonds locally, the mission of the Home expanded to become a non-sectarian organization.

1981 Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, the nursing home, and Beth Sholom Sands, the well-elderly facility adjacent to the Home, both opened their doors. A non-profit housing corporation was created in Richmond as an overseer of both well-elderly facilities.

1989 Beth Sholom Home of Central Virginia opened a new 116-bed nursing home.

1990 During the 1990’s, Beth Sholom Home is facing its greatest challenges. In both the Central Virginia and Eastern Virginia facilities, government budget decreases and revisions in the Medicaid reimbursement formulas have widened the gap between actual cost and reimbursement cost. Lower interest rates have negatively impacted on interest income yields from endowment sources. This combination of factors has increased deficit potentials and added importance for the need to raise funds to avoid cutting back services.

1999 Beth Sholom of Virginia celebrates its 52nd year; Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia is 19 years old. Plans are underway to build an Assisted Living Facility on the premises, to open in 2003.

2002 Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia evolves into Beth Sholom Village as the groundbreaking for The Terrace Assisted Living Facility occurs.

The Gifford Unit at the Berger-Goldrich Home of Beth Sholom Village, has decertified 26 of our 120 beds from Medicaid to Non-Medicaid.
